House Passes Iran Nuclear Agreement Legislation

Press Release

Date: May 14, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

The House approved H.R. 1191, Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act on Thursday afternoon. The legislation, which Congressman Bill Shuster (R-Hollidaysburg) supported, passed by a vote of 400-25.

"As the world's leading sponsor of terrorism, a nuclear Iran would not only destabilize the Middle East, but would have repercussions here in America and across the world for decades to come," said Congressman Shuster. "The United States must stand with Israel, and our allies, ensuring that Iran is not able to obtain a nuclear weapon. Furthermore any agreement by the administration must have Congressional approval and oversight."

H.R. 1191, Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act ensures that Congress reviews and has the right to reject any nuclear deals that the administration may potentially agree to with Iran. Last week by a vote of 98-1 the Senate also approved legislation to protect America's interests from a bad deal with Iran that does not have the approval of Congress and fails to permanently disarm Iran.

"The magnitude of these negotiations cannot be understated, they will drastically alter any chances of peace and stability in the region," continued Shuster. "The House's action is a positive measure for our allies like Israel, and it protects the American people from being forced to accept a deal that does not guarantee that there will not be a nuclear Iran in the future."
