Jill Stein's Issue Positions (Political Courage Test)

On The Ballot: Announced, Green Party for President
Project Vote Smart does not permit the use of its name or programs in any campaign activity, including advertising, debates, and speeches.
Jill Stein has refused to provide voters with positions on key issues covered by the 2016 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their parties and advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads. Jill Stein is still welcome to submit the test at any time.

What is the Political Courage Test?

Issue Positions

In response to the increasing unwillingness of candidates to answer issue questions, Project Vote Smart has researched Presidential and Congressional candidates' public records to determine candidates' likely responses on certain key issues. No Inferred Answer Education: Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • "In that we see really what was kind of a dirty trick, where an education bill that should have been debated in the light of day was bundled into the budget, and essentially, changes were railroaded thorough the budget that probably would not have stood public scrutiny, whereby teachers are now being evaluated by the scores of their students on a high-stakes testing system, which is more of an indicator of poverty and an indicator of social disability, rather than the teachers' capability. Teachers are being judged by the social distress that they've chosen to take on or not. It's guaranteed to drive teachers out of challenged communities, which is where we need good teachers, and where we need to be supporting teachers. Needless to say, this also intensifies high stakes testing, which is a terrible way to educate our kids." http://wamc.org/post/jill-stein-weighs-run-president (wamc.org)

And a quarter of the people who seek payments get denied by their private insurers. It's a fiscal and administrative nightmare which has gutted public services in Massachusetts. Schemes developed by health industry lobbyists to enrich themselves will never take care of our real needs." http://www.independentpoliticalreport.com/2012/06/jill-stein-romneycare-and-obamacare-are-class-warfare-and-failures/ (www.independentpoliticalreport.com)

Pro-choiceCandidate AnswerDo you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Other or expanded principles

Real choice must include more than the choice of whether or not to have an abortion, and must begin with an informed choice about preventing unintended pregnancy. By providing all women with reproductive health care and family planning, as part of a program of health care as a human right, we can greatly reduce the need for abortion. Giving women real choices for education opportunities and good paying jobs will also reduce unintended pregnancies. Abortion is a necessary health care option, but will decline as women's choices expand upstream of unwanted pregnancy.

YesCandidate Answerdo you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
NoCandidate Answerdo you support reducing Medicaid spending?
NoCandidate Answerdo you support reducing Medicare spending?
YesCandidate AnswerIs balancing the budget an administrative priority?
Other or expanded principles

I will cut health care costs - a major, growing driver of the budget deficit - by cutting the wasteful, expensive administrative overhead of private insurance through a cost-saving Medicare for all system. I will also save money through bulk purchasing of pharmaceuticals, preventive care, community-based health infrastructure (including sound nutrition, safe bikepaths and sidewalks, and prevention of harmful pollution) and by drastically reducing medical inflation. My jobs program - which achieves full employment in five years - will restore tax revenues to the budget, and eliminate recession-era revenue deficits that have been another major source of the budget deficit.

Taxes on pollution to encourage clean-up and prevent polluters from imposing costs on the rest of society.

YesDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles

Elections driven by big money will never produce a government that fights for ordinary people. I strongly support the Move to Amend campaign and overturning Citizens United v. FEC.

NoDo you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Other or expanded principles

America's experience shows that capital punishment does not effectively stop crimes from being committed. And our judicial system makes mistakes, killing people who are innocent. It's time to move beyond capital punishment, to abolish it, and to instead use life imprisonment as the most severe form of sentencing for those who cannot be trusted to live in common society.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support spending on infrastructure projects for the purpose of job creation?
YesDo you support the 2010 temporary extension of unemployment benefits?
NoDo you support the 2010 temporary extension of tax relief?
Other or expanded principles

My Green New Deal program will create 25 million jobs to end our unemployment crisis, bring economic security to all Americans, and move toward a renewable energy economy. Unemployed workers will be able to simply go to a local "employment office" to find work when the private sector does not provide it. Green jobs will make our communities sustainable economically, socially and environmentally by expanding clean manufacturing, sustainable agriculture, public transportation and clean renewable energy, as well as providing jobs in education, affordable housing and social services. This is an investment that will pay for itself many times over.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
Other or expanded principles

The Federal government should stop pushing corporatization of education in the guise of "reform". Competition for funding is being used to mask overall budget cuts that harm students. Let's help our kids' schools, rather than penalizing them when they are struggling. We will educate the whole child for lifelong learning and independence - not simply do job-training for the short-term benefit of corporations. We will stop attacking teachers and focus on the real obstacles to learning, including poverty, nutrition, and health.

YesDo you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
Other or expanded principles

I will move our economy speedily toward clean, renewable energy. We will stop subsidizing and expanding polluting fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Instead we will create a surge of jobs in clean renewable energy and conservation - as we simultaneously improve the health of people, communities, the economy and the environment.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support United States' combat operations in Afghanistan?
YesDo you support a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
Other or expanded principles

U.S. interests can be best served by a demilitarized foreign policy, guided by human rights and international law. The Bush/Obama policies of unending war and military bases in over 100 countries costs us not only blood and treasure, but sacrifices America's higher calling as a beacon for peace and democracy in the world. We should go after criminals but in doing so, should maintain, not violate the law. Assassination without trial denies rule by law, and for this reason, undermines the values that we seek to protect.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
Other or expanded principles

For public safety, gun ownership should be appropriately regulated.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
NoCandidate AnswerShould individuals be required to purchase health insurance, as mandated in the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Other or expanded principles

I will replace ACA with improved Medicare for All, which provides quality care while saving money. (See "Budget".) ACA makes a profit-driven system even more expensive by adding complexity ("exchanges") to an already massive bureaucracy. Crafted by insurers, it provides $400 billion in taxpayer subsidies for stripped-down policies that enrich insurers while forcing consumers to buy the inadequate plans through a mandate. Costs continue to skyrocket, as seen with the Massachusetts plan (on which ACA is based), impoverishing consumers, businesses and government while draining resources from safety-net hospitals and threatening care for tens of millions who?ll remain uninsured.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
YesDo you support allowing illegal immigrants, who were brought to the United States as minors, to pursue citizenship without returning to their country of origin?
NoDo you support the enforcement of federal immigration law by state and local police?
Other or expanded principles

Immigrants have long given vitality to America. Today's immigrants should not be discriminated against by those of us who are descended from immigrants, many of whom similarly, were undocumented or "illegal." I will resolve the current crisis in immigration while respecting human rights and economic justice. Undocumented immigrants will be offered a path to citizenship. I will repeal NAFTA, which undermined small farmers across Latin America and the U.S., deprived millions of their livelihoods, and made them economic refugees in search of work. Replacing NAFTA with a fair trade agreement is essential to solving the ongoing immigration crisis.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support same-sex marriage?
Other or expanded principles

All people are entitled to full civil and human rights in America. My administration will defend those rights for everyone, regardless of race, religion, culture, gender, or sexual preference.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
Other or expanded principles

This proposal to turn our Social Security system over to private corporations would lead to huge losses for retirees who depend on Social Security. And it would create investment risks that cannot be tolerated in our Social Security program.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

My top priority is to create a full employment green economy. This will end the recession, combat climate change, and reduce federal deficits (by restoring tax revenues). I will implement a Medicare-for-All insurance system, which guarantees care while reducing wasteful bureaucratic overhead, pharmaceutical profiteering, and medical inflation. And I will invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Start-up costs for these programs will be covered by cutting unnecessary military spending and requiring wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share of taxes. Ultimately, expenses will be more than paid for by savings.
