h) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
The issue of abortion is emotional and contentious. I believe we need to work to decrease the number of abortions through education, parental involvement, and the accessibility of resources for women. I do not support additional restrictions on abortion in Montana like mandatory ultra-sounds or extended waiting periods. The Legislature should continue to approve federal money to family planning clinics, including Planned Parenthood. Let's work together toward decreasing abortion numbers through proactive and preventative tactics rather than by restricting a woman's right to make her own health care decisions.

I support the Common Core standards being implemented in math and English. Montana's Common Core Standards are more stringent and less ambiguous than previous standards. I like that Montana's Common Core is not a federal mandate. Local school boards must achieve these state standards, but still have oversight over instructional materials, curriculum, and offered courses. Of course it is not perfect. One of the problems right now is the amount of classroom time taken for all the required tests, especially in elementary schools. Data is important, but so is the time teachers have with their students to teach.

As a state, we can and should work to decrease our greenhouse gas emissions. That being said, we do not need a one size fits all approach coming from the Federal Government to accomplish this. Montana needs to be in the driver's seat when it comes to its own energy future.

My district has been hit particularly hard in the last year with the loss of timber jobs. As a legislator, I want to create an economic environment that will protect our remaining timber jobs while attracting other potential manufacturing employers. We need living wage jobs to support communities. As a state, we rank toward the bottom when it comes to mental health. Montana also has the highest suicide rates in the nation. These issues need to be addressed head on during the next legislative session.
