In 1977, Howard emerged as the sole owner/operator of the men's retail business and was named Businessman of the Year by the CSRA Business League.
In 1994 Howard received an Outstanding Service Award from the administration of Lucy Craft Laney High School for his involvement in starting the Lucy Craft Laney High School Mentoring Program, which provided mentoring for at-risk youth.
He also received an Outstanding Service Award from the New Savannah Road Social Services Outreach Program in 2002 for his work as one of the founders of the New Savannah Road Social Services Outreach Program. This program provided outreach for youth and seniors. The program offered after-school tutoring, intermediate computer skills for seniors and introduced inner-city youth to cultural activities.
