Reason for Seeking Public Office:

I am angry, disgusted, heartbroken and just downright mad about the endless fighting of the two parties in Washington D.C. and I am not taking it anymore! I am a candidate for the U.S. Senate as an Independent, determined to break the stranglehold of the insane partisan bickering that is dragging our nation down. I am still the "fix the debt" moderate conservative I was when I served as Republican Senator for three terms; however, I have become convinced that both parties are locked into a lobbyist-controlled spending and taxing cycle, trapped in poisonous partisan fights while nothing is being resolved. As a Vietnam combat veteran, I have come to see most of our conflicts overseas as "a waste of American blood and treasure." We are not the policemen of the world. I would rather spend more of that money here at home on items such as education and tax relief.

I plan to do something about it, but I need your help!

I'm often asked if an Independent can be effective for South Dakota - definitely yes! Senate rules provide for an Independent - South Dakota needs an independent, powerful US Senator to speak for you on state and national matters. We have many problems in Washington, and as an Independent I could work with both sides and the President to gain fair treatment for South Dakota. There is an Independent movement afoot in America and South Dakota -- many people are unhappy with the direction our country is going. There is hope: many authorities say that an increase in the number of independent Senators could change America.

I am seeking to return to the US Senate for just one single six-year term. While most current US Senators spend over half their time raising money for the next re-election. I would not have another election -- I could devote 100% of my time to serving the people of South Dakota and the nation.

However, I need your ideas and your financial assistance. The great problem I have in running as an Independent is raising money, as none of the traditional lobbyists give to Independents, as they will not be able to control me once I get to Washington: I will truly represent South Dakota. You did the great honor of electing me to Congress for 22 years. I hope to continue to serve you as your Independent Senator.

I would be immensely grateful for any support you can provide!
