Title: Prohibits Partisan Instruction in Classrooms

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits partisan instruction in classrooms.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits a public or charter school teacher from doing any of the following, subject to the revocation of his or her certification (Sec. 1):
    • Promoting a “partisan doctrine” or conducting “unipartisan exercises” in school during classroom instruction or extracurricular activities;
    • Encouraging students to promote or adopt the teacher’s partisan or political viewpoints; or
    • Putting on public display a student’s support for the teacher’s political position.
  • Requires a school district administrator to actively prevent or stop a teacher’s partisan or political activity in the classroom in a “timely manner”, subject to the revocation of his or her certification (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes the State Board of Education or the Superintendent of Public Instruction to direct the withholding of up to 10 percent of a public or charter school’s monthly state aid if it fails to prevent or stop partisan or political activity in the classroom within 60 days of being notified of the activity (Sec. 1).
