Title: Authorizes religious objections by professionals
Vote to pass a bill that requires government protection of the expression of religious beliefs.
-Prohibits state government from denying or revoking an individual’s professional or occupational license due to any of the following (Sec. 1):
-Declining to provide service because of an individual’s “sincerely held" religious beliefs;
-Refusing to affirm a statement that is contrary to their religious beliefs;
-Expressing religious beliefs; or
-Operating the individual’s business pursuant their religious beliefs.
-Exempts peace officers from the provision that authorizes an individual to decline to provide service because of religious beliefs (Sec. 1).
-Specifies that the provisions of the bill are not an authorization for the following (Sec. 1):
-Sexual misconduct;
-Prohibited conduct; or
-Conduct that violates the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.
-Prohibits discrimination against religious organizations in contracts with public bodies for the following (Sec.2):
-Religious beliefs; or
-Willingness to alter the exercise or expression of religious beliefs.
-Authorizes a religious organization to receive compensation and attorney fees if their religious rights under this act have been violated (Sec. 2).
