PENCE: "CARD CHECK IS A BAD IDEA IN THE CITY, AND ON THE FARM"

Joins Leaders To Discuss Impact of Card Check Legislation On Agriculture Community

U.S. Congressman Mike Pence today joined Republican leaders in Congress and other agricultural leaders in discussing the adverse impact that the Employee Free Choice Act would have on the agricultural community and rural economies. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

"I'd like to thank my colleague, Chairman Frank Lucas, for his steadfast work representing the interests of our nation's farmers and ranchers.

"I'd also like to thank my fellow Hoosier Chuck Connor for taking the lead in opposing this legislation on behalf of America's family farmers.

"Let me be clear. Card check legislation creates an environment where workers are denied privacy and forced to vote in an atmosphere of intimidation. It also drives democracy from the workplace.

"If this legislation becomes law it would devastate economic growth and job creation in the agriculture sector. Card check is a bad idea in the city and it's a bad idea on the farm.

"Vegetable processors like Red Gold in my district in Eastern Indiana will be hurt tremendously. When ag processors are hurt, so are our nation's farmers and ranchers.

"They deserve better. House Republicans will defend their right to a secret ballot."
