ASSISTANT DEMOCRATIC LEADER CLYBURN STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT BIDEN'S FY24 BUDGET PROPOSAL

Today, Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn released the following statement on President Joe Biden's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2024.
"President Biden often invokes his father's favorite expression, "Don't tell me what you value. Show me your budget, and I'll tell you what you value.' President Biden's FY24 budget proposal tells us that he values a strong and prosperous America built from the bottom up and the middle out. My Republican colleagues, on the other hand, continue to demonstrate that they value cutting taxes for their ultra-wealthy corporate friends while cutting the critical lifelines that hardworking Americans rely on to support their families and seek opportunity.

"President Biden's budget will make historic investments in the American people. His fiscally responsible proposal will ensure that Medicare is fully funded through 2050 and will strengthen Social Security, without raising taxes on those making less than $400,000 per year. It will fully restore the American Rescue Plan's expanded Child Tax Credit, which lifted nearly 4 million children out of poverty, and will increase food security for low-income families through investments in school meals and WIC. The proposal will also build on his plan to make higher education more affordable by increasing the discretionary maximum Pell Grant. These investments, plus many more, will help us build an economy that works for everyone, lower costs for hardworking Americans, and help struggling families get back on their feet while reducing the deficit by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade.

"If Congressional Republicans wish to disavow their numerous plans to gut Medicare and Social Security, they need to show us their proposal. The American people deserve to know where Republicans' loyalties lie--with everyday Americans or with the ultra-wealthy and well-connected."
