Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn released the below statement following President Joe Biden's 2023 State of the Union address:

"Tonight, President Joe Biden delivered a clear and resounding message: we have made incredible progress on behalf of the American people over the last two years, and now it is time for us to buckle down and finish the job for our children today and our grandchildren tomorrow.

"President Biden inherited a democracy in peril and a struggling economy. He has been the engineer of a great recovery which has renewed Americans' ability to access the promise of this great country. Job creation has been at record highs, and unemployment has been reduced to record lows. Under the President's leadership, we finally enacted legislation to address decades-long problems: much-needed funds to repair infrastructure and close the digital divide; caps on the cost of insulin and prescription medication for our seniors; critical investments in clean energy jobs; and long-overdue care for our toxic-exposed veterans. As the provisions of these bills go into effect, the American people are beginning to reap the fruits of our labor.

"However, as the President said tonight, there is still more that needs to be done. In particular, the expanded Child Tax Credit that significantly reduced child poverty must be renewed, and we must provide affordable health care coverage to millions of uninsured Americans living in the states, including South Carolina, that have refused to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. President Biden's steady hand has served our country well throughout the last two years, and I remain confident that he is the most capable guide to have at the helm as we push forth on our march towards a "more perfect union'."
