Majority Leader Schumer Statement On The 2nd Anniversary Of The January 6th Insurrection

Press Release

Date: Jan. 6, 2023
Location: Washington, DC

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement today on the two year anniversary of the violent attack on the Capitol:

"Today marks 2 years since a violent mob of insurrectionists -- sanctioned by the former President --descended on the Capitol in an armed and deadly effort to halt the peaceful transfer of power and reverse the outcome of a free and fair election. To this day, Donald Trump continues his attempt to poison American democracy with his Big Lie.

"This anniversary should serve as a wakeup call to the Republican party to reject MAGA radicalism, which has time and time again led to Republican failures. Unfortunately, the utter pandemonium wrought by House Republicans this week is just one more example of how the extreme fringe of their party, led by election deniers, is pulling them further into chaos and making it impossible for them to govern. For their own sake and for the sake of the country, Republicans should reject their MAGA wing and commit to working with Democrats to deliver bipartisan victories for the American people.

"Today we also commemorate the sacrifices and bravery of the Capitol Police, the DC Metro Police, the National Guard, and those who put their lives on the line to defend and preserve our democracy two years ago. Whether it was holding the line on the lower west terrace, leading insurrectionists away from the Senate Chamber, or acting quickly to protect members and staff, history will forever note that on January 6th, democracy lived on because of those heroes. On this second anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, Americans must rise to the occasion to ensure, and to expand, the promise of democracy -- and never take this noble experiment for granted."
