WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the Affordable Care Act:

"I am pleased the U.S. Supreme Court today upheld the Affordable Care Act, which has been a lifeline for tens of millions of people before and during this pandemic. When this landmark bill was passed by a Democratic Congress and signed by President Obama in 2010, it was the culmination of almost a century of efforts began by President Theodore Roosevelt to enact legislation to widely expand health care coverage.

"Today's victory at the highest court reaffirms that the Affordable Care Act is here to stay. This is the third attempt to use the Supreme Court to strip health care from Americans who need it most. It ought to be the last. This law guarantees that the more than 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions--2 million of those in my home state of South Carolina--cannot be denied health insurance as a result. Now we must continue building on it to make health care affordable and accessible for all Americans."
