Majority Whip Clyburn Issues Statement Following House Passage of The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act

U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn issued the following statement today on House passage of the name change of H.R. 4 from the Voting Rights Advancement Act to the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act.
"It is fitting that today as we memorialize John Lewis in the Capitol Rotunda, we honor his memory by renaming this legislation with which he is so closely identified.

"John dedicated his entire life to ensuring all Americans can exercise this sacred right. His beating on Edmund Pettus Bridge led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Today we must restore the provisions of that legislation that were stripped by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013. H.R. 4 was written with John Lewis's input to meet the criteria laid out by the Court to prevent voter suppression.

"Enacting the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act is the best thing we can do to honor this American hero."
