Senator Murray Responds to Supreme Court Ruling Undermining Access to Birth Control

Statement

Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision in Trump v. Pennsylvania (Little Sisters of the Poor) which was announced this morning. The court ruled that employers can deny birth control coverage to employees, upholding rules from President Trump and Vice President Pence.

"I'm incredibly disappointed by the Court's decision that leaves many who can't afford birth control on their own, but I'm as determined as ever to keep up the fight for reproductive rights. Over a decade ago, Congress passed a law to make sure insurance would cover care like birth control, and in light of this decision it's important we take action once again to make good on that promise. Essential health care shouldn't be a luxury for people who can afford it, and no one should have to worry about their health care decisions being overruled by their employer, their school, or President Trump and Vice President Pence."

Senator Murray and several of her Democratic colleagues also filed an amicus brief in Trump v. Pennsylvania.
