Rangel Honors Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act

Statement

Date: July 2, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Charles B. Rangel who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement for the 51st Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act, which falls on Thursday, July 2nd:

"Today marks the 51st anniversary of the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

The Act was a major step towards equality in all aspects of American life, with far reaching effects from ending segregation in schools to putting an end to the unequal application of voter registration requirements.

Inspired by the enactment of the Civil Rights Act, I joined Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's march towards equality from Selma to Montgomery, which ultimately led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. While we have made great strides since the Civil Rights Movement, we still have a long way to go until America is free from all discrimination. Our fight for equality and justice for everyone in our great Nation is not yet over. Let us work to end all racism, discrimination, and violence, as we promote peace and understanding throughout our nation."
