U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., has gone into the locked room in the Capitol to keep up with trade legislation as it's taking shape.

"I'm reading it," Tipton said Saturday of the TransPacific Partnership bill as it's being drafted. "You have to leave your cellphone and pen and read it without taking notes."

His finding so far: "Wait and see."

Colorado could benefit with the possibility that the agreement could further the export of liquefied natural gas, but the TransPacific Partnership might not address that opportunity, Tipton said.

Congress has voted to give President Barack Obama the authority to negotiate the trade agreement, but the agreement must win congressional approval on a standalone vote. The agreement also can't be amended.

How long it might take before a measure is ready to vote isn't known.

Once legislation is ready, it is to be subject to public inspection for 60 days before Congress can vote.

"We've got to make sure we're getting a good deal," Tipton said.

Tipton toured much of the Grand Valley on Saturday, participating in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Grand River Diversion Dam and visiting Community Hospital as it's under construction. He also visited Mind Springs Health, 515
28 3/4 Road.

He also fended off inquiries as to whether he is considering taking on U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who is seeking re-election in 2016.

"I'm focused on the district here," Tipton said, noting that efforts to protect Western Slope water and boost employment have "moved the needle a little bit."
