Rogers Votes to Protect Unborn Babies

U.S. Rep. Harold 'Hal' Rogers (KY-05) voted to protect the sanctity of human life through the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36). Based on substantial evidence that unborn children feel pain at least by 20 weeks, this bill establishes federal legal protection for unborn children at 20 weeks, with exceptions to save the life of the mother or in cases of rape or incest. The bill passed the House on Wednesday, May 12.

"While surgeons guard against pain with anesthesia for fetal surgeries at 20 weeks, other unborn children of the same age are painfully destroyed," said Rogers, a long-time member of the Pro-Life Caucus. "As a staunch supporter of human life, I was proud to cosponsor this bill, which will protect those unborn children, while also empowering women and providing compassionate care for both the mother and baby."

The bill also promotes counseling and treatment for mothers by requiring abortion providers to produce information explaining the born-alive provisions and notice of the woman's right to sue if those protections are not followed.

The U.S. is only one of seven countries that allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
