McCaskill Sits Down With Army Chief of Staff Nominee

Press Release

Date: July 15, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill this week met with General Mark Milley, 21st commanding General of U.S. Army Forces Command and nominee to be the next Army Chief of Staff, to discuss his nomination process, recent cuts to Fort Leonard Wood and the critical role the installation plays in our nation's defense, and the need to address retaliation against military sexual assault survivors.

"It was great speaking directly with General Milley today," said McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. "At a time when our nation faces grave national security threats and internal challenges including retaliation against military sexual assault survivors, we need top leadership and a highly qualified commander in this position. The confirmation process will highlight these threats as well as the General's readiness to lead our nation's Army in meeting them."

If confirmed, General Milley would serve as the Army's most senior uniformed officer. The Chief of Staff supervises and organizes army units as a designee on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

General Milley earned his fourth star and took command of Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in August 2014. His prior posts include commanding General of III Corps and Fort Hood, Texas. He has also served as a commander in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
