Guthrie Votes to Boost Cybersecurity Protections

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

This week, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted in support of two bills that will help better protect our cyber networks and increase protections against cyber attacks.

"Cyber attacks have become increasingly frequent and affect everyone from consumers and merchants to health care providers and government agencies," said Congressman Guthrie. "The individuals and rogue governments behind these attacks are capable of large-scale cyber attacks that could cause immense damage to our public and private-sector infrastructure."

Passing in the House with Congressman Guthrie's support were: H.R. 1560, the Protecting Cyber Networks Act, and H.R. 1731, the National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement Act of 2015.

H.R. 1560 will allow private companies to voluntarily share cyber threats with each other, as well as with civilian agencies in the federal government. Through increased awareness of current threats others are currently facing, companies can strengthen their networks for potential new threats and better protect consumers from harm. H.R. 1731 will provide liability protections for such threat sharing with the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC). Both bills require companies to remove all personal information before the threat information is shared with the government, and these bills do not allow any sharing for purposes of law enforcement or surveillance.

"These bills take a responsible approach in balancing security and privacy, and will allow businesses to be better prepared to protect against cyber attacks," added Congressman Guthrie.
