Guthrie Supports Reforms to Surveillance Programs

Press Release

Last night, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted in support of H.R. 2048, the USA FREEDOM Act of 2015.

"Over the past year I have heard loud and clear from Kentuckians who have serious concerns about the government's bulk collection of phone data," said Congressman Guthrie. "This bipartisan national security bill addresses those concerns by stopping bulk data collection and barring large-scale, indiscriminate searches of phone records."

In addition to ending the collection of bulk data records under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, H.R. 2048 will improve transparency by requiring the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence to provide detailed information to the public about their efforts, while strengthening national security by providing additional resources to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other foreign terrorists that enter the United States.

"H.R. 2048 increases transparency and protections, while preventing government overreach. I am pleased that we have found a way to balance the two very important needs of privacy and security," said Congressman Guthrie.
