Whitfield Votes to Promote Free Trade, Increase Transparency and Accountability During Negotiations

Statement

Date: June 18, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01) voted today in support of H.R. 2146, the Trade Priorities and Accountability Act. The measure passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 218 to 208. Whitfield released the following statement upon passage.

"I believe that trade is important for Kentucky and America, and that it strengthens our economy, creates economic opportunity for American workers and businesses, and ensures that America continues to lead the global economy.

"The legislation passed by the House today is not a free trade agreement, but rather an instrument for Congress and the American people to clearly define our trade objectives, demand transparency and accountability from the President during and after the negotiations, and ultimately produce a deal that is in the best interest of all Americans.

"While I believe that TPA is an essential element to promoting trade, the fact remains that this President has created some serious trust issues with Congress and the American people. If President Obama negotiates a deal I believe is not in the best interest of America, I will vote against it."
