Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today released the following statement after the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing to examine the Amtrak accident that occurred in Philadelphia last month:

"It's imperative that Congress and regulators understand the exact cause of this tragic accident to ensure the proper safety measures are in place to prevent future accidents," said Davis. "We also have a responsibility to taxpayers, who invest more than a billion of their hard-earned tax dollars into Amtrak each year, to make sure they are spending these funds appropriately and prioritizing the safety of its passengers."

Davis questioned Joseph Boardman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Amtrak, about the safety mechanisms in place and Amtrak's funding requests at today's hearing.

In March, the House passed H.R. 749, the Passenger Rail Reform and Investment Act of 2015, which fully authorizes Amtrak, increases transparency, and helps Amtrak further prioritize spending, by a vote of 316-101.
