Walz's Bipartisan Bill to Protect Farmers, Retain "Gold Standard" for U.S. Grain, Passes House

Today, Representative Tim Walz (D-MN), Ranking Member of the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, announced that his bipartisan measure to reauthorize the U.S. Grain Standards Act passed the House of Representatives. The compromise bill extends the authorization of the Federal Grain Inspection Service and prevents privatization of the inspections. These inspections are important to both buyers and sellers of grain who rely on them to provide a "gold standard" quality assurance of grain, backed by the federal government.

"The U.S. currently holds the distinction of having the most sought after grain inspection system in the world. We must ensure the integrity of the system while making certain these inspections continue to take place," said Walz. "This compromise legislation does just that and gives peace of mind to both buyers and sellers of grain in knowing that the U.S. "gold standard' system of grain inspections will continue."

Walz co-sponsored the measure along with Chairman of the Agriculture Committee Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX), Agriculture Committee Ranking Member, Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN), and Chairman of Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR).

Walz spoke in support of the bill on the House floor.
