Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to the Obama Administration's announcement that the United States and Cuba would re-establish diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies:

"I am very happy to see continued diplomatic progress between the United States and Cuba.

Our nation's long standing Cuba policy has never been effective and is very outdated. This historic change re-establishes diplomatic ties with a close neighbor after more than five decades of isolation. Today's announcement builds upon the shift in policy announced late last year that thawed relations between our countries, providing for increasing economic engagement between and promoting Cuban peoples' access to the internet, and more. These new policies will all help empower the Cuban population and promote democracy in the region.

I am grateful to President Obama, Secretary of State Kerry, and so many of our diligent diplomats for their efforts to work with Cuba and I urge them to keep up the good work."
