Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's hearing oral arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges, a key marriage equality case:

"I believe marriage equality has the stamp of inevitability on it. It is not a matter of "if', but "when'. As a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, I am so pleased to see the dramatic strides we've made on LGBT rights over the past few years. While we have come a long way and public opinion has shifted strongly in favor of equal rights, members of the LGBT community continue to face significant discrimination even today.

I spent time today with demonstrators in front of the Supreme Court, and I was happy to lend my support. Earlier this spring, I joined an amicus brief with 166 Democrats in the House and 44 Democrats the Senate urging the Supreme Court to find in favor marriage equality in this case.

Last summer, in Illinois, marriage equality became the law of the land. Now the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges can settle the matter on a federal level in the same way that Loving v. Virginia recognizes the constitutionality of interracial marriage. I look forward to celebrating the resolution to this landmark case later this summer."
