Rep. Trott Votes to Improve Education in Southeast Michigan

U.S. Representative Dave Trott (MI-11) today voted in support of legislation to improve public education in Southeast Michigan by reducing federal mandates, restoring local control, and empowering parents and education leaders to hold schools accountable for effectively teaching students.

"Our kids in Southeast Michigan deserve the best possible education--and that all starts by giving control back to our local communities and school districts. I have been speaking with teachers, students, and parents throughout Southeast Michigan and I believe they should be deciding how best to educate our kids, not Washington bureaucrats. This bill doesn't fix every problem, but it makes major strides toward ending the top-down, Washington-knows-best approach and building the kind of strong education system American families deserve," said Rep. Trott.

The legislation, supported by Rep. Trott, replaces the No Child Left Behind education initiative and reduces the federal government's involvement in America's K-12 schools. The legislation will:

Replace current national accountability based on high stakes tests with state-led accountability systems, returning assessment of student performance to states and local school districts.

Eliminate more than 65 ineffective and duplicative federal programs and replace them with a Local Academic Flexible Grant, helping school districts better support students.

Protect state and local decision making in schools by preventing Washington from coercing states into adopting Common Core or other assessments.

Empower parents with more school choice options by expanding charter school opportunities, as well as allowing funds to follow low-income children to the traditional public or charter school of the parent's choice.
