Congresswoman Speier's Statement on the Shootings in Charleston, South Carolina

Statement

Date: June 18, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

"I cannot condemn in strong enough terms the heinous killing of eight worshippers and a pastor at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church this morning. The victims and their families are in my prayers. We must stand together in this time of tragedy and affirm that such acts have no place in our country; that we will never be broken or cowed in the face of violence and hatred.

"On the contrary, we must be more determined than ever to heal the families torn by this attack and achieve justice for its victims. Throughout its history, Emanuel A.M.E. Church has been a place of refuge and strength for those standing against the worst trials of slavery, segregation, and opposition to the Civil Rights Movement. May its members persevere, and again show us how hope, solidarity, and humanity overcome evil."
