Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Obergefell v. Hodges Decision

Statement

Date: June 26, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges:

"Today we celebrate freedom, equality and love as the U.S. Supreme Court's decision recognizes that marriage is a fundamental right for all Americans. I am overjoyed that today's ruling means that marriage equality is now the law of the land in all 50 states. This is a victory for thousands of loving LGBT families and a huge step toward ending discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans.

"However, the fight for equal rights doesn't end with marriage equality. In many states, including Michigan, many LGBT Americans are still at risk of discrimination in the workplace or based on where they live. That's why we must seize on the momentum of today's historic decision to continue fighting for additional advances toward equality, including employment protections. No person should be fired from their job, or evicted from their home, or denied service from a business because of whom they love."
