Ros-Lehtinen's Office Working to Help Constituent with Rare Cancer, Manny Alvarez

Press Release

Date: June 11, 2015
Location: Miami, Florida

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is assisting her constituent, Manny Alvarez, in order to help him receive the lifesaving treatment he needs. Ros-Lehtinen's office has reached out to the Social Security Administration and has written to the Chairman & CEO of Florida Blue, Patrick Geraghty, asking that the insurance company's denial of treatment be reconsidered so Manny can continue to fight this terrible disease.

Manny was diagnosed with and is currently fighting Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma, stage four, a very rare cancer that is reportedly rarer than being struck by lightning. His doctor has said that Manny is suffering from innumerable nodules throughout his lungs, spleen, liver, and bones and it is necessary to begin treatment immediately. Since he was diagnosed over a year ago, Manny has been bravely fighting this cancer with support from his family, friends, and the South Florida community. Ros-Lehtinen is inspired by Manny's dedication and is committed to doing all she can to make sure he gets the treatment he needs.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"Being stricken with aggressive cancer at any age is a tragedy but especially at a young age like Manny's. It is my hope that this young man will be able to get the help needed to effectively fight this disease. My office is working diligently to help Manny get the lifesaving treatment he needs. This young man should have every opportunity available to fight this aggressive cancer."
