Peters Recognizes Black History Month

Statement

U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement honoring the celebration of Black History Month:

"Throughout the month of February, we come together as Michiganders and as Americans to celebrate Black History Month and reflect on the tremendous contributions African Americans have made to our country. From community leaders to entrepreneurs to educators, African Americans have helped shape and enrich our communities. Their many contributions serve as a constant reminder that diversity is one of our country's greatest strengths.

"As we observe Black History Month, we should also take a moment to recognize how far we have come as a nation and yet how far we still have to go as we work together to achieve true equality. The civil rights movement changed the course of our nation's history for the better, and left a lasting legacy that touches our lives every day.

"As we continue to work toward equality, we must carry that legacy forward. We must continue our efforts to ensure that every American's voice is heard by protecting access to the ballot box and reauthorizing the Voting Right Act. We must promote economic opportunity for all and a strong middle class by ensuring that small businesses and entrepreneurs can access the resources they need to grow our economy and create jobs. And we must continue working to break down barriers that divide us and advance the promise of fairness and justice for all. In honor of Black History Month, let us recommit ourselves to the goal of making America a place where anyone who works hard and plays by the rules has the opportunity to succeed."
