Today, Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01) recognized Earth Day with a video message and the introduction of legislation along with Congressman Jared Huffman (CA-02) and Congressman Gerald E. Connolly (VA-11) that will transform the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) fleet into a global leader in efficiency and innovation. Congressman Takai released the following statement following the introduction of the Federal Leadership in Energy Efficient Transportation (FLEET) Act:

"While there has been great work accomplished nationwide, there is still much more that can be done to protect our environment. The legislation introduced today will help to modernize the USPS, greatly reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency standards of the world's largest civilian vehicle fleet. In addition, the bill would also save the USPS hundreds of millions of dollars in annual fuel and maintenance costs," Takai said.

"This Earth Day I encourage everyone to join me in learning more about protecting our aina and the impact it has on the future of our keiki. Increasing our use of renewable energy sources and implementing greater sustainability practices are ways we can make a difference today, for the generations to come. Together, we can ensure that Hawaii's unique and special environment is preserved," Takai added.

The Huffman-Connolly-Takai bill would require the USPS to reduce petroleum consumption by 2% each year over the next 10 years, saving an estimated $400 million, and sets minimum fuel efficiency and tailpipe emission standards for all new fleet vehicles. The bill would also instruct USPS to incorporate new technologies into postal routes that increase fuel economy or reduce tailpipe emissions.
