Takai Votes Against Harmful Elementary and Secondary Education Act

Today, Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 5, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA):

"The version of the ESEA that was presented in the House today drastically cuts funding for education, weakens protections for disadvantaged students, and fails to support the teachers we entrust to educate our keiki. In addition, by allowing portability of federal funds, this bill will undermine the efforts made so far to strengthen and provide support for our public schools across the nation. I hope that any final bill will provide Hawaii's students have the skills and resources they need to succeed," Takai said.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was passed with a vote of 218-213. Over 60 national organizations oppose H.R. 5, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, and the NAACP. President Obama has issued a veto threat on this bill.
