Takai Joins Duckworth in Introducing Bill to Support New Mothers

Press Release

Date: May 22, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01) released the following statement after joining with other lawmakers including Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) to introduce legislation that would establish a private space in airports for mothers to express breast milk:

"For too long we have failed to prioritize the needs of our mothers. The legislation introduced today will provide a private space for mothers to attend to their child. Women need to have a space that is convenient, safe, and secure so that they are able to address their needs. It is crucial that we begin to provide support for mothers across the nation," Takai said.

The bill requires all large and medium hub airports in the United States to provide a private space in each terminal for mothers to express milk. Airports would have two years to comply and would be able to use Airport Improvement Program funds for the purpose of complying with the new requirements. The space would have to meet the following requirements:

Not be located in a bathroom.

Have a door and lock.

Have a place to sit and a table or other flat surface.

Have an electrical outlet.

Be located after the security check point.

Be readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities.
