Slaughter Supports Equality, Applauds Supreme Court Decision

As the US Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision supporting equal marriage, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter issued the following statement:

"This historic decision affirms all American families and I applaud the Supreme Court for acting to recognize the individual's right to marry whomever they choose regardless of their sexual orientation," said Rep. Slaughter. "I am proud to fight for the equality of our LGBTQ friends and loved ones throughout the nation."

With today's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court struck down state bans on same-sex marriage and requires states to recognize marriages performed in other states in accordance with the Fourteenth Amendment.

Congresswoman Slaughter has been a longtime advocate for marriage equality and equal rights for all Americans. As a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, Congresswoman Slaughter voted against the original so-called Defense of Marriage Act and to repeal the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. In March, Congresswoman Slaughter signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of marriage equality in the Obergefell case. She has also fought partisan efforts to use taxpayer funds to pay for lawyers to defend the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.
