Why I voted Yes on H.R. 91

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

I voted "Yes" on H.R. 91, the Veteran's I.D. Card Act.

This bill would allow any honorably discharged veteran to receive an identification card from the Department of Veterans Affairs. In order to receive a formal identification card, veterans would have to prove their discharge was under honorable conditions by providing a copy of their DD-214 discharge form or other relevant documentation.

Veteran I.D. cards are currently issued to service members who have served at least 20 years or received a medical-related discharge. With these cards, veterans are often able to qualify for discounted prices or promotional rates on a range of goods and services. While former service members who do not have such cards are also eligible for these discounts and promotions, proving their service requires that they carry their discharge papers with them at all times--something which is a burden for most. This commonsense change to the law would ensure that members who served their country honorably have access to all the benefits they are eligible to receive.

This legislation was agreed to by a vote of 402-0.
