U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released the following statement congratulating Arizona State University (ASU) for successfully advancing to the final round of a Department of Defense-led competition that would enable the university to establish a new manufacturing innovation institute focused on developing flexible hybrid electronics:

"This impressive step in a highly competitive process highlights ASU's leadership in interdisciplinary research and its success in speeding up the development of new technologies for the modern warfighter. If selected in the final round of this competition, ASU will be a key player in the innovation and production of new technologies with important applications for the military, including advances in sensory technology to improve the structural integrity of aircraft and life-saving smart clothing that would enable our soldiers to identify early warning signs of injury. I congratulate ASU for its pioneering work and look forward to seeing its future contributions to the State of Arizona and the nation."

The competitive grant project will drive a partnership between industry, government and academia to accelerate the creation of new flexible hybrid electronics technology, and will receive equal funding from federal and non-federal sources. The winner of this competition is expected to be announced later this summer.
