Rep. Engel Blasts Republicans for Again Voting to Restrict Women's Rights

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women Abortion

Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, condemned House Republican leadership for voting to enact a nationwide ban on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, jeopardizing women's health and obstructing their constitutional rights.

"Like a broken record, House Republicans are once again stuck on rolling back women's constitutionally-protected rights," Congressman Engel said. "This latest affront to women's health care is particularly egregious, imposing additional burdens on rape survivors and barring abortions for incest victims who are older than 18. This ill-conceived Republican measure -- which President Obama has pledged to veto -- wastes critical legislative hours fighting the same tired battles against women from decades past.

"Most importantly, it forces Republicans' misguided ideology upon women and interferes with their ability to make decisions about their own reproductive health privately, with a doctor's guidance. The Republican Congressional leadership disgraces itself and, by proxy, the entire legislative body with its out of touch and irresponsible priorities."
