Rangel Remembers Veterans on D-Day

Statement

Date: June 5, 2015
Location: New York, NY

Congressman Charles B. Rangel who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement in honor of the 71st Anniversary of D-Day, the Allies' invasion of Normandy, France.

"Today, we commemorate one of the most important days in our history. Seventy one years ago, over 150,000 Allied troops united to dismantle the Nazis and brought freedom to Western Europe. Over 6,000 Americans gave their lives for this victory. Today, we remember these men, their families, and the price they have paid in exchange for freedom here at home and around the world.

As we remember the sacrifices made on that day, we must also remind ourselves of the present. Since 2001, our Nation has lost more than 6,600 brave young men and women in both Iraq and Afghanistan. For those who were fortunate to return home, some continue to face battles at home as they reintegrate into civilian life. They deserve as much support as possible. Congressman Glen Thompson (R-PA) and I reintroduced HR 2516, 'E-Health & Telemedicine Support Act,' to help eliminate red tape in health bureaucracy and further enhance access to health care for our wounded veterans.

As a Korean War veteran, I thank our brave soldiers of World War II who showed us the value of freedom and love for their country. I am proud to see this tradition continue today."
