Hoyer Statement Opposing House Republicans' Transportation, Housing And Urban Development Funding Bill

Statement

Date: June 9, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5)released the following statement after voting against House Republicans' Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2016:

"I am deeply disappointed that House Republicans passed a bill tonight that disinvests in our nation's critical infrastructure needs and limits access to important housing programs.

"I am particularly concerned that this bill cuts $50 million in grant funding for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), which is the main provider of public transportation in the National Capital region for residents and tourists alike. Metro operates the second largest rail transit system and the sixth largest bus system in our country. Thousands of Fifth District residents rely on Metro to commute and millions of Americans utilize Metro while visiting the Capital each year.

"Since 2009, Congress has worked in a bipartisan fashion to pass legislation that would fulfill the annual federal commitment of $150 million to Metro. Reducing this funding would put needed improvement and safety projects in jeopardy. I call on House Republicans to work with Democrats to restore this critical investment and pass a bill that adequately funds infrastructure in our region and across the country while creating jobs and strengthening our economy."
