Subcommittee Continues Making #Safety4Drivers A Priority w/ Review of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications

Press Release

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, chaired by Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, June 25 at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, "Vehicle to Vehicle Communications and Connected Roadways of the Future."

"For over a generation now, every generation has worked to improve auto safety, and the advent of vehicle-to-vehicle communication is this generation's contribution -- offering a range of benefits to keep drivers safe on the road," said Burgess. "As more manufacturers test this potentially life-saving technology every day, this hearing will give us an opportunity to check in on its progress and understand what we in Congress can be doing to further improve safety on American roads."

This hearing will continue the subcommittee's work to improve auto safety and provide members the opportunity to closely examine how vehicle-to-vehicle communications can improve driver and vehicle safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is in the process of a rulemaking that would require vehicle-to-vehicle communications devices in new cars. Members will review the preparations that are being made in both the public and private sector to support the deployment of this technology in consumer vehicles and on the nation's roadways.

The committee is also reviewing the status of federal work on the unlicensed spectrum needed to safely deploy vehicle-to-vehicle communications technology through a series of ongoing meetings with the Federal Communications Commission, the Department of Transportation, and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
