Walker's Statement on Trade Adjustment Assistance Vote

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Mark Walker (NC-06) issued the following statement after the House's failed passage of Trade Adjustment Assistance.

"Today's vote on TAA clearly demonstrates President Obama's failed leadership. Congressional Democrats could not muster enough votes to move his trade adjustment assistance program forward, illustrating that labor-unions still control the Democratic Party," said Rep. Walker. "Trade Adjustment Assistance is fiscally irresponsible governance. Even its supporters recognize that it's ineffective, and I am proud to vote against this waste of taxpayer dollars."

In a 2012 study prepared for the Department of Labor, TAA participants showed no measurable increase in employment potential or wages earned after completing the federally subsidized job training. In fact, in the four year period following lay-offs for the two groups, the participants saw a negative impact on overall income and benefits estimated at $26,837.
