Ellmers Supports Transparency and Accountability in Trade Agreements

Statement

Issues: Trade

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC-02) issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 1314 -- The Trade Priorities and Accountability Act, which reauthorizes Trade Promotion Authority and strengthens Congress' role in trade policy:

"North Carolina ranks among the top 5 states in terms of exports across industries like textiles and agricultural products such as pork, sweet potatoes, and tobacco. If we are going to continue leading the way in these industries--and if we want to position our country as a leader in the global economy--then it is imperative that America set the tone by establishing strong and enforceable trade rules. TPA is about American trade--it is about North Carolina trade, and this reauthorization allows for the United States to leverage the most robust trade agreement possible. It will mean more job opportunities and a thriving American economy for us all."

"One of the most important components to this legislation is that it strengthens the role of Congress throughout the negotiation process and allows Congress to establish our expectations to the president. Prior to today's legislation, the president could unilaterally negotiate a trade agreement -- without any input or direction from Congress -- but today's vote puts an end to this. Because of this legislation, no trade agreement can move forward without a vote from Congress.
