Gov. Scott: Fort Lauderdale Gained More Than 28,000 Jobs Over the Year in April 2015

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach metro area gained 28,500 jobs over the year in April 2015. The Ft. Lauderdale metro area's unemployment rate declined by 0.8 percentage point over the year, from 5.6 percent in April 2014 to 4.8 percent in April 2015. Florida businesses have added more than 865,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "As businesses move to and expand in Florida, our economy continues to improve. The Fort Lauderdale area gained 28,500 jobs over the year and unemployment is down to 4.8 percent. Since December 2010, 865,600 private-sector jobs have been created across Florida. Fort Lauderdale is just one example of why Florida has the perfect climate for business."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year were professional and business services with 6,300 new jobs, construction with 5,100 new jobs, and leisure and hospitality with 4,300 new jobs. In April 2015, the Ft. Lauderdale metro area added the most jobs of all the state's metro areas in construction and in information with 600 new jobs. All ten major industry sectors gained jobs over the year in April 2015. In April 2015, the Ft. Lauderdale metro area was ranked fourth among all metro areas in Florida for online job demand with 24,780 openings and also ranked fourth for high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) job openings with 5,993 job openings.

Florida created 25,800 private-sector jobs in April 2015, and a total of 865,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for April 2015 was 5.6 percent. In April, more than 37,600 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Broward and the state's other 23 Regional Workforce Boards.
