Rep. Lujan Grisham Votes for Congressional Oversight of Iran Deal

Press Release

Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham voted today for bipartisan legislation that will give Congress the opportunity to review any final international agreement on Iran's nuclear program before the President could waive or suspend sanctions on Iran that were imposed by Congress.

The legislation, which now goes to the President for his approval, is in line with Rep. Lujan Grisham's support for continued negotiations, while requiring oversight by Congress.

"A diplomatic solution negotiated by all sides is the best option to keep nuclear weapons out of Iran," Rep. Lujan Grisham said. "But a diplomatic agreement will be much more effective with broad support from the American public and Congress. I welcome the opportunity to review any final agreement to ensure it is in the best interest of our national security. Just as important, Congress will have continued oversight of the implementation of any agreement."

In addition to the legislation passed today by the House, Rep. Lujan Grisham has also signed on to a letter -- supported by 150 members of Congress -- that expresses support for continued negotiations to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The letter to President Obama expressed support for the political framework negotiated by the six parties trying to reach a final agreement over Iran's nuclear capabilities. The letter also urges the President to work toward a strong and verifiable agreement that will prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon.
