Senator McConnell Announces Additional Funding For The Blue Grass Army Depot
*$20 million in new funding added to FY'06 Defense Authorization bill*
U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell announced today that the Senate Armed Services Committee approved his request for an additional $20 million in funding for the Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (ACWA) program at the Blue Grass Army and Pueblo Depots. McConnell's language is included in the FY'06 Defense Authorization bill, which now must be approved by the House and Senate.
The Department of Defense had requested $33 million for disposal efforts at the ACWA sites. The additional funding was included at McConnell's urging and reflects a 60% increase above the Department's request, bringing the total amount authorized for FY'06 to $53 million.
"With this additional funding we took another important step toward the safe disposal of the chemical weapons stockpile at the Blue Grass Army Depot," said Senator McConnell.
Last week, the President signed into law a provision sponsored by Senator McConnell that will ensure that DOD cannot divert previous year ACWA monies to other sites. It also forces the Department to spend $100 million at the ACWA sites within 4 months.
