Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, issued the following statement today in support of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2016 (H.R. 1735):

"Congress has the responsibility to "provide for the common defense' in order to safeguard our homeland from the many threats we continue to face and to protect the freedoms we cherish. The United States has an exceptional responsibility to stand strong and ready in a world where our enemies are unrelenting and the many threats to our national security are ever present and evolving. Specifically, this year's NDAA includes provisions that:

Give our defense forces the support they need to carry out their mission by fully equipping our troops, strongly supporting military families, and creating a new system that will allow service members who are not eligible for military retirement to participate in and contribute to a thrift savings plan that will allow for matching contributions by the Department of Defense.

Streamline the acquisition process by implementing critical decisions at the beginning of the acquisition process, while maintaining accountability and placing priority on outcomes that reflect the best interests of the taxpayer and troops.

Prohibit the transfer of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to the United States and also prohibits the construction of detention facilities within the United States. The bill also rescinds the authority vested in the President to unilaterally transfer detainees.

"In a world where threats to our freedom are global, it is imperative that our troops remain the mightiest in the world by providing them with the tools essential for success."
