Reid Statement on April Employment Report

Location: Washington, DC

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today on the April employment report. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy added 223,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate dropped to 5.4%:

"Sixty-two months of private sector job growth. That's what Americans are seeing under the Obama administration. More Americans in Nevada and across the country would be sharing in these gains if Republicans worked with us.

"It's been over 100 days since Republicans took over the Senate. And what do they have to show for it? Not a single bill passed that creates jobs or improves the lives of working families. Instead Republicans are passing legislation to benefit special interests, and passed a budget that attacks the middle class while providing handouts to millionaires and big corporations.

"Republicans are determined to take away the health care of 16 million Americans, slash Medicare for seniors and job training for struggling workers, and make college even less affordable. Yet they won't close a single special interest tax loophole to reduce the deficit. That's not just wrong for America's middle class, it's immoral.

"Senate Democrats know that the way to rebuild our economy is to rebuild the middle class. Now we need Republicans to stop doing the bidding of millionaires and billionaires, and instead work with us to create jobs, give workers a raise, and strengthen working families."
