House Marks 'Tax Day' with IRS Reform

Press Release

Date: April 15, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Emphasizing the importance of an accountable and transparent federal government, Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-02) today supported, and the House of Representatives passed, several common-sense bills to increase oversight while reducing fraud and abuse within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The House-passed bills limit overreach by holding IRS agency officials directly accountable for abuse and misconduct. Further, they protect American taxpayers from burdensome regulations, and prevent the IRS from targeting organizations because of their political or religious beliefs. These bills now go to the Senate for consideration.

"Americans want accountability and transparency from the federal government -- two of the very principles that have been violated by the IRS," said Congressman Scott Rigell. "There is a general level of distrust in government, and when it comes to filing taxes and dealing with the IRS, Americans feel vulnerable. Congress plays an important oversight role in the management of taxpayer dollars, and I'm proud of the House's commitment to reducing waste, fraud, and abuse, while protecting Americans from federal overreach and burdensome regulations."
