Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Marriage Equality Cases Before U.S. Supreme Court

Statement

"As the U.S. Supreme Court today hears oral arguments in these cases, I am confident that marriage equality will soon be the law of the land. Michigan's discriminatory same-sex marriage ban is wrong, outdated and unconstitutional. It's my hope that the Justices will stand on the right side of history and say that every American, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, should have their rights recognized.

"These historic marriage equality cases have always been about loving families. Families like April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse's, who are challenging Michigan's marriage ban, want nothing more than the same rights afforded to other committed couples. I stand with April and Jayne, and the countless other loving LGBT families like theirs across the nation, who deserve to have their family treated equally under the law.

"Marriage equality is already recognized in the majority of the states, and it's long-past time for our state to recognize the rights of LGBT Michiganders as well. In the coming months, I am hopeful that the Supreme Court will recognize marriage as a fundamental right for all Americans."
