Vitter Supports Senate Vote on Judicial Nominees

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Sen. David Vitter joined six of his freshmen colleagues today for a press conference announcing their support of judicial nominees receiving an up or down vote in the U.S. Senate.

"On the campaign trail last year, the people of Louisiana told me time and again that they wanted me to help the Senate get past the partisanship and do the people's business. We are at a critical juncture; we need to give these judicial nominees a fair up or down vote and let the chips fall where they may. Then we can move on to the business of the American people, such as energy, highways and other job creation efforts," said Vitter.

On the Senate floor this morning, Vitter spoke in support of giving highly qualified individuals whom the president has nominated for federal courts the opportunity to have an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.

"This issue is primarily one of fairness to these individual nominees. As stated by our Majority Leader on numerous occasions, this chamber can confirm or reject nominees, and we will accept the outcome. We insist, however, on a yes or no vote on judicial nominees," Vitter said.

Earlier today, Vitter sent a letter to U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu acknowledging her position to make a positive difference in this Senate debate by rejecting the obstructionism of Democratic leaders and helping keep the Democratic leadership from shutting down the Senate. In his letter, Vitter notes that this is particularly a pressing issue for Louisiana because one of the nominees, Justice Priscilla Owen, is nominated to fill a vacancy of the U.S. Fifth Circuit, which includes Louisiana.

"As U.S. Senators, it is our constitutional duty to give advice and consent when a president nominates individuals to the bench. I think that every nominee deserves a vote. It's a matter of fairness," said Vitter.
